HouseHouse inin Suesa.Suesa. Cantabria
The house sits in a peaceful rural setting close to the beaches of Somo and Loredo, on a small plot bordered by single-family homes and livestock buildings. The design of the house is organised by means of two elegant minimalist wooden gabled volumes that reinterpret the traditional architecture of the area and favour its harmonious integration into the surroundings. The house is distributed on a single floor open to the garden, maintaining a welcoming and friendly scale in contact with nature. The main body, which is oriented towards the south and the views, houses the living space, while the secondary body, located in the background, houses the storage and garage spaces.
The intermediate space between the two architectural volumes houses the entrance hall of the house, which is configured as a glazed entrance hall opening onto a welcoming wooden courtyard presided over by an olive tree. The volumetric simplicity is enriched by the carving of large abstract openings in the envelope. Large glass openings framed in concrete bands connect the house to the landscape, while openings covered with black micro-perforated sheet metal conceal areas requiring greater privacy.
The heat-treated wood cladding gives the envelope a dynamic and changing character, as the tone of the boards changes over time, acquiring a wide variety of shades. This treatment renders the wood inert and maintenance-free, which is why it is so widely used in Nordic architecture.
To the southeast, the house overlooks the main views of Peñacabarga through a large window that completely opens up the corner, dematerialising the limit between inside and outside. The solar protection of the large windows is achieved through two strategies depending on their orientation: the south-facing windows are protected from the midday sun by a longitudinal concrete cantilever, while the west-facing windows are protected from the afternoon sun by a screen of jasmine plants. This screen of jasmine plants provides privacy from neighbouring buildings and introduces a pleasant natural aroma into the interior of the house.
The day area integrates the living room, dining room, kitchen and porch into one continuous space, which encourages a direct and close relationship between the occupants, and between the occupants and the garden. The interior design is simple and minimalist, thanks to the reduction of visible elements and the use of a restrained palette of materials. The living room and kitchen furniture is integrated into the perimeter, with much of the storage hidden behind panelling. Large glass surfaces and light tones allow the house to be filled with natural light and acquire a serene and friendly character. The high ceilings expand the space and highlight the gable roof, giving it a modern character. The ensemble is enriched by the incorporation of touches of natural wood in the furniture and the presence of the large monolithic piece of marble that forms the kitchen island.
